Case Study: Martha’s Vineyard Move as a Work of Art

Residential Client –Dr. R

Move Location – Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts

Move Destination – New Canaan, Connecticut

Move Timetable – December 2020

Moving a residence from Martha’s Vineyard or any of the islands requires a ton of pre-planning. This goes beyond the typical home and includes close coordination with the ferry to ensure the desired dates and whether or not the boat can accommodate your moving vehicles. Throw in 15 statues and busts ranging in size from 100 to 1500 pounds—with a value in the $300,000 range–and you have a bit more than a standard residential move on your hands.

As with any move, planning is key. While the pandemic has forced us to conduct virtual estimates, a move of this size demands an in-person assessment. That initial assessment gave us the data needed to formulate a plan:

  • Three days for packing
  • Two days unpacking
  • Three vehicles
  • Eight people for the five-day move

Packing the statues meant the creation of customized crates. Fortunately, some of the statues had different parts and could be packed in separate customized boxes. Considering that one of the statues stood 12 foot tall, not a bad thing.

Part of the move included a detailed floor plan of the new space. BTI’s charge was not only to move the items to the new space but unpack and display precisely to the specs of the plan.

The logistics at the new house, required that we crane in one of the statues going to the master bedroom.

The pack and load took place December 7-9, with delivery on Dec 14. The unloading and unpacking took place on December 14-15.

With the home unpacked and statues in the pre-designated positions, we called the move complete on December 15. The owners were pleased and submitted the following:
